God told the Israelites not to live with or adopt the cultural ideals of other nations. This wasn’t xenophobia . He knew they would be seduced by their idols and choose those idols over him, and they did. Be careful who you live with and who you look up to for the same reason.
Exodus 23:33 (NIV) 33 Do not let them live in your land or they will cause you to sin against me, because the worship of their gods will certainly be a snare to you.”
